After years of campaigning by experts across the bereavement sector, including the Childhood Bereavement Network and Child Bereavement UK, the Department for Education has now embedded grief and loss education into its statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSE) guidance.
This long-awaited change will support teachers to open up conversations about grief, helping the 1 in 29 children who experience bereavement – that’s one child in every classroom – and preparing all pupils for life’s inevitable losses.
At Edward’s Trust, we welcome this milestone and remain committed to supporting schools, children, and young people across the West Midlands in navigating grief with compassion and confidence.
